Driving Lessons Chelmsford - FAQ

What do I need before I can start my driving lessons?

You will need to obtain a provisional driving licence from the DVLA using form D1 which is available from the Post Office.  The cost is currently £43, but when you pass your test you can exchange it for a full licence free of charge.

How old must I be?

You must be 17, unless you are in receipt of the full disability allowance, in which case you can start at 16.

What about my eyesight?

You must be able to read a new style number plate (e.g. PA55 RAY) at a distance of 20.5 metres with or without spectacles/contact lenses.  If you use spectacle/contact lessons to read the number plate then you must use them for the test too.  If you fail to read the number plate, your test will be cancelled, you will lose your fee and you may have your licence revoked.

How many lessons will I need?

The Driving Standards Agency says that the average number of lessons required is 45 hours with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) like Ray, plus around 22 hours of private practice with family and friends.

Can anyone sit with me for this private practice?

No, accompanying drivers must be at least 21 years old and have held a full UK licence for at least 3 years.

Will anybody else be in the car on my lessons?

No, driving lessons with Ray’s Driver Training are strictly on a 1 to 1 basis.  Just you and me!

How will I know when I am ready to take my test?

Ray will give you a comprehensive knowledge of the syllabus, and between us we will tailor a plan of lessons that will get you to test as soon as possible.  If you take 2 hours per week, you are usually ready for your test within around 5 months.  Ray will advise you on this.

How long does the driving test take?

Usually about 40 minutes, but this depends on the road and traffic conditions, and can take longer.

I have heard that examiners can only pass a certain amount of tests each week.  Is this true?

No, of course not!  If you are good enough, you will pass.
